Skateboarding become popular in the 1970s, a lot has been changed in the way it is played. In fact, most of the credit can be traced to the place where it was played in the back alleys and garages.
Before, skateboarding was done on the street. In fact, most skateboarders today say that the roots of the sport can be traced from the roots of real forerunners of skate boarding that do skitching while hitching a ride. These skaters don’t have their own standards of style.
They just played freely on the street where the sport was more suitable until people like Rodney Mullen made the sport a “profession.”
After introducing freestyle skateboarding and skateboarding tricks like the “kick flip”, more and more skaters were inspired to discover and create their own tricks.
Today, skaters have made a mark on the way the sport is played. Aside from the different variations of the sport, skate boarding has also paved the way for another shoe style that caters to the need of the skater’s adventurous feet.
Flying with skate shoes
Belonging in the line of sports shoes, skate shoes are shoes that are specifically designed and made to meet the demands of a sport like skateboarding. Skate shoes are said to be a variation of the classic athletic shoe because they are designed to give maximum support, durability, and comfort the skateboarder needs.
Most skaters agree that a good skate shoe has to have a strong and durable “ollie” pad so it will last longer. It should also have a thick sole and thick tongue so it can endure the tough demands of the sport while protecting the skater from possible injuries.
Aside from skaters and skateboarders, bicycle riders are also known to wear skate shoes because they provide a strong grip to the pedals and have thick soles that usually serve as brakes. With the fad of skateboarding, skate shoes were also being worn for casual everyday wear.
Most skaters would agree that the very first and “only” skateboarding shoe company built is the Airwalk. In fact, they say that Airwalk is the only shoe company that understands the needs of the skateboarder that is why they continue to produce shoes that are specifically designed for the sport.
One of the company’s earliest endorser was no less than Tony Hawk. Being a popular figure in the skating community, Tony Hawk and Airwalk gave skate shoes a different dimension. Airwalk continued to reign supreme for a very long time when it came to designing and producing skate shoes for the growing skateboarding market.
But, as time went by, more and more skateboarding shoe companies emerged that made the market more competitive. Another innovative skate shoe company was the Vans or Van Doren Rubber Company that provided a good alternative for Airwalk products.
Giant shoe companies like Nike and Adidas also tried to produce their own version of skate shoes but their attempt to penetrate the market became futile.
